Job Description
Introduction
The Senior Architectural Technologist plays a key role in our design team, reporting to the Production Manager. This role is involved in the production of all aspects of a project, including schematic design, design development, construction documents and contract administration. Possessing passion and creativity in their profession, the successful candidate will have strong building envelope knowledge and a solid technical background including advanced AutoCAD and Revit experience.
Responsibilities
Team Collaboration and Communication
- Work within a collaborative environment with the design team.
- Communicate with clients and construction teams to ensure accurate project details and deadlines.
- Maintain effective and proactive client communications.
- Communicate with various municipalities during the building permit process, construction, and inspection stages of the project.
- Liaison with design and drafting groups.
- Liaison with design and production team.
Project Management and Oversight
- Attending and lead internal and external meetings through all stages of a project, responsible for preparing and keeping an agenda and ensuring meeting objectives are met.
- Create and maintain project progress and tracking files and work-in-progress (WIP) sheets.
- Monitor project health continuously using progress files for project completion percentage and work-in-progress sheets for financial metrics and forecasting project costs at completion.
- Project Management oversight to include evaluation of changes and potential risks to project budget or schedule. Suggest recommendations for recovery if possible.
- Complete Contract Administration as required for each project/contract in place. This includes SI, PCN, CO issuance and tracking.
Design and Documentation
- Prepare, review, and approve design & construction drawings.
- Review and coordination of engineering drawings.
- Drawing production accountability.
- Prepare development and building permit drawings and packages & submissions.
- Review and distribute shop drawings, including but not limited to structural steel, cladding, precast, and washroom accessories.
- Participate in design presentations and client meetings.
- Oversight and QC of drawing production including:
- Existing/as-built drawing production
- Due diligence drawings
- Land Use Bylaw/Zoning review
- Building Code Review & Matrix
- Tender/pricing drawings
- Architecture and interior design detail drawings
- Permit application drawings
- Construction drawings
- Post-construction as-built drawings.
Permitting and Compliance
- Oversee the application process for both development and building permits.
- Address Development Permit (DP) comments.
- Address Building Permit (BP) comments from the municipality.
- Zoning by-law research for a given municipality.
- Building Code classification determination to ensure all necessary compliance requirements are met.
- Extensive National Building Code knowledge to ensure project compliance.
Site Management and Administration
- Attend independent site meetings with clients, conduct site reviews, and prepare site condition documentation if required.
- Perform basic architectural calculations.
- Complete construction administration, including:
- Shop drawing review & submittal
- Coordinate and issue RFI responses
- SI coordination and issuance
- PCN coordination and issuance
- Document and issue meeting minutes.
Mentorship and Training
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and direction to Production Team Members.
- Conduct peer-editing.
- Assist with the training and evaluation of assigned architectural and design/drafting personnel.
Requirements
- 10+ years’ experience in an Architectural Technologist role.
- Advanced technical understanding and proficiency in AutoCAD and REVIT required.
- Demonstrated experience creating working and detail drawings and 3D models.
- Thorough understanding of Building Code & Bylaws - ability to implement this information into Code reviews as applicable to each project.
- Advanced knowledge of the drawing production process.
- Advanced knowledge of building envelope and building science.
- Professional attitude, punctual, assertive and personable with strong attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality.
- Working knowledge of Struct, Mech, Elect & Civil.
- Ability to listen, speak and communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently.
- Focused on accuracy and customer satisfaction.
- A proven track record of excellent communication skills
- Excellent time management skills - ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
- Proven experience mentoring and overseeing work of more junior staff ensuring accuracy and quality standards.
- Self-starter - ability to work in group or on an individual basis.
Education Requirements
- Post-secondary education in a recognized technical or architectural program.
