Senior Life Underwriter

The Client:

The client is a leading Canadian Life Insurance Company that operates in the life insurance and financial services sector. They offer a range of insurance products, including life insurance, critical illness insurance, and disability insurance.

What you will achieve in this role:

The Senior Life Underwriter plays a key role in maintaining profitability by reviewing and assessing the financial risk of individual life insurance applications. This role is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the general supervision of the Manager, Underwriting.

• Accurately assess risk within approval limits of $2,000,000+ for individual life and $1,000,000 for critical illness policies
• Provide sound underwriting decisions and support to sales, distribution, and retail business teams.
• Review mortality and financial risk for individual life insurance applications through the analysis of financial, medical, and related information.
• Support the sales team in managing distribution relationships.
• Partner with reinsurance providers to allocate risks on cases that exceed internal retention limits.
• Collaborate with senior underwriters, medical directors, or managers on complex or exceptional cases.
• Actively participate as a team member while also leading assigned projects.
• Provide coaching and technical guidance to junior and intermediate underwriters to ensure coverage decisions are accurate, timely, and well communicated.

What you must bring to this role:

• 5+ years of experience in individual Life Underwriting.
• Experience in coaching or mentoring others.
• Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, and database software.
• Strong understanding of medical and financial terminology.
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex problems.
• Proven ability to make sound, timely decisions with good judgment
• FLMI and FALU are assets.
