HDR Engineering is looking for a Substation Electrical EIT to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Western Canada.
As a Substation Electrical EIT, you will be directly responsible for developing and producing detailed engineering deliverables for high-voltage electric utility projects, from 12 kV to 500 kV transmission substations. You will actively design and document all aspects of substation systems for both greenfield and brownfield projects, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and cross-discipline coordination throughout the project lifecycle. Specific duties of the Substation Electrical Engineer include:
- Develop engineering deliverables, general arrangements, grounding, raceways, AC/DC systems, protection one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts
- Perform technical studies, grounding, CT saturation, bus ampacity, lighting, and load flow
- Prepare equipment specifications and review vendor documentation
- Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and technical evaluations
- Contribute to scopes, schedules, and budgets
- Deliver complete, accurate, and on-time design packages
- Proactively identify and mitigate design risks
- Work closely with civil, structural, telecom, and line design teams
- Participate in design reviews and client coordination meetings
- Communicate effectively with project managers, stakeholders, and vendors
- Mentor junior engineers and designers
- Review and approve design work for technical accuracy
- Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and field activities
- Contribute to continuous improvement of standards and workflows
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in substation design is required.
- Specific experience performing aspects associated with substation design including one line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding, conduit plans, foundation plans, material lists, relay and control systems control schematics, and wiring diagrams is required.
- Previous consulting firm experience desired.
- Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Some travel may be required
